The Poker Online

Monday, July 31st, 2006

When playing poker online, many of the players may be more experienced and use poker terms you are not familiar with, so if you want to play poker online, you should familiarize yourself with some of the terms used in poker.

One term used in Texas Hold’em poker online is the flop. You are dealt two cards and if you decide to bet, you will get to see the first three community cards the dealer lays on the table. This is what is known as the flop. If you decide not to bet after seeing your two cards, that is a fold.

Another term used often in poker online is all-in. When a player stays they are going all-in, that means they are pushing all their chips into the pot. This may be many chips, or if they are short stacked (that is, do not have many chips left), just a few.

When playing poker online, you may run into what is known as a bad beat. This is a lucky hand that beats you. If you have pocket Aces and someone has one Jack in their hand, but gets two Jacks in the community cards to beat you, that is a bad beat.

If you are playing poker online and you are dealt an Ace and a King, that is what is known as Big Slick. Two aces are often referred to as American Airlines or bullets. A Broadway hand is and ace high straight (Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and Ten). Two kings are called cowboys and a pair of twos is referred to as ducks.

Chances for Winning by the Losers

In baseball, it has come close (see 2005 San Diego Padres, 1973 NY Mets). In the NFL, only two .500 teams have made the playoffs since 1991 (1991 NYJ, 2004 STL). In the NBA, however, it has been the norm to find teams with a losing record compete in late April and into May.

Below, a table of the number of .500 win percentage teams, the number of first round games they have won, and the number of series they have gone on to win.

Parody just hasn’t existed in the NBA playoffs. These 15 teams in the last 10 years have combined to win just 12 playoff games and have never advanced. In 2004, four teams in the East had the shot and surely one could pull off the upset? Not even the four vs. five could do it.

The last time a team with a losing record entered the playoffs and won a Series was 1988. Then, the Seattle Supersonics boasted a 39-43 record as the 7-seed and made it all the way to the conference finals. They upset both Dallas and Houston, before being swept by Pat Riley’s Los Angeles Lakers. Since Seattle, a total of 31 teams have entered the playoffs with a record at or below .500. And these teams are 0-31 in playoff series.

So, how good of a chance do Milwaukee (40-42), Chicago (41-41) and Indiana (41-41) have this year? I’m not going to say “none,” because that’s why they play the game—but let’s delve into these match-ups.

(1) Detroit vs. 8) Milwaukee

One-seeds haven’t lost since 1999. But there was a technicality about that year: First, 1999 was the NBA lockout year, and only 50 regular season games were played. Second, three other teams had the same 33-17 record, but Miami won by a tiebreaker.

In a full 82-game season, it was the 1994 Denver Nuggets who upset the top-seeded Supersonics to advance to the second round.

With Flip Saunders at the helm, we’ve seen the Pistons play looser offensively, but still maintaining impressive defense—leading them to their best regular season record ever (64-18). Don’t worry about the nonsense concerning Ben Wallace not getting along with Flip: This team is focused when it comes to the playoffs.

Having said this, Milwaukee has their hands full. Let’s just look at player vs. player matchups.

Detroit Milwaukee Advantage

PG Billups Ford Detroit

SG Hamilton Redd Detroit

SF Prince Simmons Detroit

PF R. Wallace Bogut Detroit

C B. Wallace Magloire Detroit

Billups will substitute size for speed and can dominate Ford. Hamilton is a workhorse. Prince is undoubtedly better than Simmons. And I’ll just point out the experience from the front court to suffice my argument for the Wallaces.

To make matters worse, the only type of success they had against Detroit was when they played Toni Kukoc at the three. Kukoc is already banged up and will miss the first game, so his health will be a definite factor.

Prediction: Pistons in a sweep

(2) Miami vs. (7) Chicago

Chicago is the hottest of the East’s bottom-3, finishing 12-2 in their final 14 to slip into the show. They had a similar run in the final month of the season last year, winning 15 of their last 19 games. The Bulls’ only win against the Heat in the regular season came back on April 15 when the Heat rested most of their stars.

In the playoffs, it comes down to defense and though the “Baby Bulls” are young, they do buckle down, leading the NBA for the second straight season in defensive field-goal percentage (.426).

Offensively, the Bulls’ patented “drive-and-kick” out game has given opposing teams a hard time. Ben Gordon ranks 2nd in the Eastern Conference, hitting 43.9-percent from 3-point land, and point-guard Kirk Hinrich has shot 42.9-percent from behind the arc in his last five games.

Although the Heat have been locked into the No. 2 spot since basically January, I don’t see them having trouble kicking into high gear. Even when the Bulls shut down Wade in their meetings this year (12.3 ppg), the Heat have found a way to win.

The Bulls have no answer for Shaq, who had 14 points and 6 rebounds in just 20 minutes of action on April 15.

Prediction: Heat in 5

(3) New Jersey vs. (6) Indiana

This might very well be the best shot for a team at the .500 mark in the regular season to win a Series. The Nets came from the weak Atlantic Division that sent no other teams beside themselves to the playoffs. The two teams have similar defensive work ethics, as they are 5th and 6th in points allowed, respectively, in the NBA. The interesting thing about this series is the way they view each other: New Jersey players have said the Pacers are a good transition and look to slow it down, while Indiana players have said the exact same thing about the Nets! Wow, this should be a fun series to watch!

Jermaine O’Neal looks to be healthy into the playoffs, having played 30-plus minutes in his final 11 regular season games, but I don’t foresee him being the difference. The difference must come from the defense side of the ball, in particular, the ability to stop Vince Carter.

Peja Stojakovic and Stephen Jackson must play top-notch to pull the upset.

I have a feeling this series will go seven. The Nets were 29-12 at home, fourth-best home record in the Eastern conference, so that’s the way I lean.

Prediction: Nets in 7

The Real Gamblers Among Us

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

As we all know, gamblers are a much studied group. When a new mega-casino opens, the mix of slots vs. table games, cafes vs. buffets, etc. is already a known statistic. Big conglomerates have all used research to find out who their customers are, what they like, what they’ll spend and how long they will stay during their visits. This, in addition to those computerized “Player Cards,” tells them virtually everything they want to know about how we gamble.

Just released, we now have “Profile of The American Gambler,” an exhaustive survey compiled by Scripps Survey Research Center for the gaming heavyweight, Harrah’s Entertainment. It covers casino play, to be sure, but it’s more about who we are as people. Do we support casino gambling in our states? (Yes, the survey says.) Do we save as much as non-gamblers? (Yes, again.) Some very interesting profiles emerged from this research, and it’s a safe bet this will not be the last survey of its kind.

Highlights of the study include:

58% of adults (21+) have gambled in a casino at least once during 2005.

There were 209 million adults that gambled in a casino in the last 12 months.

The average gambler visited a casino six times in one year.

A majority of adults favor licensing casinos in their own state.

Gamblers save more and invest more than non-gamblers.

They are more likely to use technology (email, computers, satellite, cable etc.) than non-gamblers.

They travel more, and spend more than non-gamblers.

They expect to have more money for retirement than their non-gambling counterparts.

Understandably, those people with higher incomes gamble more than lower incomes.

Working older couples 45+ comprise the highest percentage of all sub-sets at 19%, with young singles at only 3%.

By far, Slot players comprise the largest group (71%) with table gamers making up the balance.

There’s more Video Poker played than Live Poker (despite the TV hype of late), and BJ is played twice as much as any other table game.

Gamblers are less religious, donate more to charity, and are twice as likely to travel.

Men are equally likely to gamble as women.

Non-gamblers eat out only ½ as much as their gambler counterparts.

Gamblers own newer cars; travel further on vacations, and are more “optimistic” about the future.

These facts seem to fly in the face of many “preconceived notions” of the irresponsible, gambler prototypes we’re used to hearing about, especially around election time. Whether we like it or not, it seems gaming has become very Mainstream America. I hope Harrah’s will do follow-up research with these same barometers being reviewed and re-tested. It will be interesting to see how, and maybe why, things change in the future.

What are the Secrets of Winning at Crapless Craps?

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Pssst…! Wanna know a secret?

How about the secrets of winning at crapless craps?

Many casinos have Crapless Craps now, and it looks promising. You can’t lose on the comeout to a 2, 3, or 12, and yet you still win on the seven! Sounds good, but if it’s such a great deal, why are the regular tables so much more crowded than the crapless craps ones?

One reason is the casino advantage. The slight come out advantage is offset by the fact that all of the other numbers besides the seven can become the point. So, on a pass line bet you can now end up with a point of 2, 3, 11 or 12. This actually increases the pass line casino edge from 1.4% to 5.3%! Plus, there are no don’t come, don’t pass or lay bets, so a regular game offers more of an advantage to the player than does a crapless game.

Wanna know how craps pros win at Crapless Craps?

Let’s find out!

One of the worst bets now is the pass line bet (5.3% casino edge), so this should be avoided at all costs. The standard 6 & 8 place bets is still there, same as in a regular craps game. A lot of people just play that and get along fine. After a seven rolls, just place both the six and eight for $30 each and when either hits take them both down and then wait for another seven before betting again. But there is a way to make some unique bets on this layout if you don’t mind getting a little adventurous.

The outside numbers in this game are the craps numbers in the regular game - 2, 3, 11 and 12. When you place the 2/12 you get 11:2 odds. When you place the 3/11 you get 11:4 odds. However when you BUY the same numbers (and pay a 5% vig) you get 6:1 on the 2/12, and 3:1 on the 3/11. Your job is to ask the friendly dealer to give you a better deal than the table advertises. You do this by “pushing the house” to decrease the vig charged.

If you buy the 2, 3, 11 or 12 for $20 (the minimum buy bet) you pay 5% or $1. If you buy it for $40 you pay $2 vig. Ask the friendly dealer if you can buy the 2, 3, 11 or 12 for $36 and still only pay $1 vig. If he says yes, ask him then if you can split up your bet and instead of betting $36 on one number, ask him if you can bet $9 each on all four numbers and still pay $1 vig for everything. If he says yes to this (you do tip the dealers, don’t you?) then you’ve got a super deal and should stay with this dealer as long as possible.

With a $9 bet on the 2 and 12 you win $54 (at 6:1) and on the 3/11 you win $27. If your dealer is really, really friendly (look for a nice smiling dealer on a fairly empty table) you can make this bet and take everything down after one hit and then wait for another seven before putting them all back up again.

If the dealer resists your offer, just come back later and try it with someone else, or bet the 6 & 8 method described above. But you should try to push the house whenever possible! It’s lots of fun to do - and very profitable!

Pssst…! Now you know the secrets of winning at Crapless Craps!

What Type of Poker Player Are You?

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

There are several types of poker players out there. If you play often enough, you’ll encounter most of them.

The loose passive player becomes involved in almost every hand with weak cards. Their philosophy is that any card combination can win and should be played; that’s the loose play. However, the loose passive player is just that, passive. They decide to play with any hand but they rarely play with any aggression. They rarely raise despite calling most of the time. They play too aggressively with weak hands and too cautiously with good ones.

The loose aggressive player is also involved in a lot of hands, all most all of them in fact. They are the polar opposite of loose passive players in that they raise as often as possible, with virtually nothing to go on. They’re bluffing most of the time and although they may hit you hard in the short term, in the end, you’ll be glad to have these players at your table.

The tight players, whether they’re tight aggressive or passive, they tend to get involved online with strong cards. That said, tight passive players are easy to bluff and, because they only play good hands, fairly predictable. The way to deal with these players is quite simple: back off if they’re playing with any aggression.

The only type of player you should be is tight aggressive. This is the type of player you will want to be after you’ve had a run of bad luck playing any of the other three styles.

The tight aggressive player makes the right decisions. They tend to get involved with only the strongest cards, but when they get involved they play aggressively so they’re difficult to bluff. They raise, check-raise, and force other players. They build up a good pot.

If you aren’t a tight aggressive player already, you need to become one and ideally, you will be the only one at the tables you decide to play.

When it comes to handling the different styles of play, loose to tight, aggressive to passive, a whole range of strategies may serve you. Among the best strategies for loose aggressive players is the biding of time. They tend to trip themselves up with over eager play; bidding too much with cards that have little value. Bluffing often presents a risky proposition but it may be a judgment call if your cards are marginal and you’re doing a good job of managing the old bankroll.

Tight passive players, on the other hand, (avoid tight aggressive players) can be bluffed quite easily. When they are aggressive, and it’s rare, you know they’re likely to have a strong hand; backing off becomes a good idea. Otherwise, you can steadily wear away at these players who by nature pass up many opportunities to cash in on strong hands.

Perhaps one of the most devastating and frustrating experiences for experienced players online is losing big to new and bad players, the players who know next to nothing about the game. Unfortunately, many skilled players have lost out to newbies since the explosion of internet poker. When Chris Moneymaker walked away with 2.5 million in 2004, hundreds and thousands of people began dreaming of similar success at the table.

What seems to irk experienced players is the version of beginner’s luck these poker newbies enjoy. When you’re on a tilt against a newbie, you’re psychological strength is really put to the test. They know nothing about the game and it’s usually apparent. They win with crazy cards and you’re left wondering why you read so many books on poker over the years if you can loose so much to such ridiculous moves.

The thing to remember, though: experience and skill do eventually triumph. Believe it. They do. Don’t let your vexation knock your game off balance. Stay focused and stay calm against all crazy beginners. Be gracious. Don’t give them any advice about how they should play (unless you want the advance to sting you in the future). Let mistakes be made; let all newbies pay for their inexperience. Even if they have a run of good luck, newbies will pay you in the end.

Regardless of the type of player your up against, you should concentrate on playing tight and aggressive poker. Don’t give your money away making daring bluffs but do fight to the death when you know your cards are good. In the long run, tight aggressive play is the only method that brings in results. Don’t forget it.

Playing Bingo - Catholics and Casinos Like the Odds

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

When you think of gambling you likely think about Vegas, Atlantic City, casinos, and even cards. Do you, though, think of the local VA, elementary school, or Catholic Church? If not, then maybe you should consider that not only is a Bingo a game of chance, but it is also one of the most popular kinds of gambling around. With that in mind, consider some of the basics of the game before you run off to the Wednesday night games at the local VA lodge and try to win the big jackpot.

Bingo was actually originally a European game. It was played in Italy in the 16th century and then later by the French. By the 19th century, Bingo was being played all over Europe by adults for money and by children to learn basic arithmetic. It wasn’t until the early 20th century, though, that it actually found its way to the United States, and eventually your local Catholic church’s fund raiser.

Really, perhaps the easiest thing about bingo is that all you need to pay it are the cards, bingo cages, and markers. Bingo cards should have five rows and five columns. As the numbers are called they are marked on the cards with either the markers or what are called daubers. Daubers are really the tool of choice for true bingo players. They are like stamps for marking bingo cards.

The only real strategy you will see in your typical bingo game, aside from good luck charms, are the purchase of multiple cards to increase your odds of having a winner. The only problem is that you need to make sure you keep your number of cards manageable enough so that you can always keep track of all cards on each number call.

Finally, keep in mind that bingo is completely a game of chance. You have the same odds as anyone else, or rather each of your cards does. In the end, there are no quick ways to win or secret strategies. Many people keep good luck charms with them or sitting on the bingo table near their cards, but if you do not like the idea of pure luck, then bingo is not the game for you.

So next time you are at that big Catholic fundraiser, elementary school game night, or even at your local bingo hall, keep these ideas in mind. Bingo can certainly be quite enjoyable and you can win money or prizes, but keep in mind that there is little if any skill involved. If you keep those things in mind and try to take the game for what it is then you will be able to enjoy it to the fullest amount possible.

Advantages of Playing Online Poker

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

Getting involved in online poker games is a wonderful way of enabling you to play a great card game in the privacy of your own home. There are so many tremendous advantages to playing these poker games via the internet. First of all, it is convenient in that you do not have to drive a long distance or even short distance to a gaming facility as you will most likely only need to walk into the other room where your computer is set up. A second reason why online poker games are a great way to enjoy your card games is that the stakes may sometimes be a bit lower than if you were to proceed to gamble at a physical establishment. A third advantage of playing poker games online is that concentration is more readily available as you are not playing poker in a distracting atmosphere where other players are sitting to the left and right of you in sometimes overly close quarters. A fourth and important advantage to playing poker online is that you can play this fun game 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without ever having to leave the comfort of your own home. Lastly, as gaming tables at casino establishments can sometimes be largely filled up, by playing online poker you will ultimately eliminate the wait that often exists at gaming tables in casinos.

Convenience for the seasoned or beginner poker player is one of the many advantages of playing online poker. Even though gaming institutions are popping up in more and more places these days, it is still likely that you will have to drive a good distance to reach a casino. As a number of casinos will usually have ample parking, there will still be those instances where you will have to look around for awhile for a parking spot and sometimes even pay for your parking while you are inside the casino. By playing poker online at home you are able to completely disregard the notion of driving anywhere at all and can use your time more wisely as opposed to wasting it by driving to and from the gaming facility. Another plus with not having to drive to a gaming establishment is that you will save money on gasoline. Online poker is definitely for the convenience-lover.

Lower stakes in the poker game are also an advantage of playing poker in an online setting. As individuals that play poker online are often beginners and are trying to learn the ins and outs of the game, low stakes poker games online make this type of table game a great place in which to learn without losing large amounts of money. In order to find the websites offering low stakes poker online, simply do a general search using a phrase such as “low stakes poker online” or “poker games online low stakes” and you will be met with a number of poker websites from which to choose the one you like best. Just be sure to thoroughly review the site prior to playing for safety reasons to make sure it is legitimate.

A third advantage of playing the game of poker online is that concentration will be more focused and centered in the comfort of your own home. Sometimes when you are playing poker table games at a casino, or any type of table games for that matter, other players can be distracting and almost intrusive. With online poker, you are able to concentrate better thereby increasing your chances of winning. When people are unable to concentrate, they tend to make silly moves thereby losing more money than they might have had they been able to concentrate. Playing poker online enables you to be able to concentrate on the game at hand and eliminates any outside distractions that may be present within a casino setting.

Having the availability of playing online poker 24 hours a day, 7 days a week is another wonderful advantage of playing a poker game in this manner. This is wonderful for the individual who likes to wait until later at night when the house is quiet and work is done for the day when he/she can sit down in front of the computer and enjoy a game or two of online poker. It doesn’t matter what time of day it is as you are sure to find an online poker game in progress. Availability is a beneficial advantage to the poker game lover.

Finally, playing online poker is a great way to ensure your place at a virtual gaming table. How many times have you driven to your local casino, or in some instances not so local casino, and found that you had to wait an unimaginable amount of time to secure a spot at a card table that was within your budget? My guess is quite a few of you have experienced this type of waiting game. By utilizing the availability of online poker websites you will be able to find a place at one of their virtual tables and no longer will you need to wait in line to enjoy some poker action. This may also help you to relax as sometimes waiting in lines can cause unnecessary anxiety and aggravation.

These are just a few reasons why playing poker online is a great alternative to playing this game at a casino in your area. Not only is online poker convenient but it also allows you to concentrate on your game and increase your winnings. Additionally, it allows you to play this entertaining game for lower sums of money, thereby limiting any potential extreme losses. Also, you will never have to wait in a smoky, crowded casino area again looking for a table spot to open up. After hearing about all of the aforementioned reasons, why not give online poker a try and see for yourself all of the wonderful things that it has to offer. Chances are you will not be disappointed.

Bankroll Management When Playing Texas Holdem Poker: How Much Do I Need?

Saturday, July 22nd, 2006

Because most of us simply do not have unlimited fund for play, and possibly lose, at the Holdem tables or any other gaming table, we must practice bankroll management. You probably have numerous questions about bankroll management in Holdem poker such as how much you should have in order to begin playing, strategies to determine your bankroll and the games you should place, how to use poker room bonus programs to build your bankroll and how to play in limit versus no limit games.

Let’s look at these questions and concerns one at a time. We will begin by studying how much your starting bankroll should total and which games you should choose to start.

A beginning bankroll should contain only those funds which are in your discretionary budget for entertainment. Never short your utility or home payments to build your bankroll to a large figure. There are no guarantees that any portion of your bankroll will return with you from the gaming tables. Sure, you could win big and double or triple your starting bankroll, but never count on gambling winnings as a source of income to pay your bills. It just isn’t smart playing strategy if you take any part of your crucial expense budget with which to wager.

Plan in your budget an amount of discretionary income earmarked as “gambling entertainment funds”. These monies, no matter how large or small the sum that goes into this category, should be used only for your wagering purposes. If you win and add to the funds, your bankroll will last longer, perhaps growing sufficiently to add to next month’s budgeted bankroll. Or you can choose to keep your winnings in a difference fund to save for a purchase for you and your family.

The size of your beginning bankroll should be based on the games your select. If you are happy playing at $1/$2 limit Holdem tables, you can easily play with only $10 per hand. But if you want to get involved with $10/$20 games, you’ll need a much larger bankroll. Ideally, begin with a bankroll of $200 or more so you can play a while in the low limit games, and a bankroll of $600 or more if you like the high limit games. If you are a novice, the low limit games are the tables on which to practice and develop your skills.

Most online casinos offer a sign-up bonus program as well as rewards for repeat deposits to your players account or for referring a friend to signup and make a deposit. While these bonuses are great and can be used for actual play, be sure to read the terms and conditions to learn any restrictions placed on these bonuses such as withdrawal limitations when using these funds. Prepare to adhere to any special terms placed on your player bonuses. These funds can be used to build your bankroll and increase your playing funds.

Every player that is not in the advanced skill category should stick to limit games, going no further than pot limit games. The bets can rise to a level that is just too expensive for a less-than-expert Holdem player in the no limit games where any bet is acceptable. Unless you have unlimited wealth, betting $200 or more in a single bet just doesn’t make sense until you know every technique and trick to use to help you win. Don’t lose your shirt by betting outside your budget. Low limit games are just as much fun as no limit, inexpensive games. The thrill of winning the pot is just as big even if the amount of chips is smaller than in the big games.

Remember to always gamble responsibly. Part of gambling responsibly means that you determine how much you can easily afford to lose in the event you don’t have a lucky gaming session and stick with that bankroll, never going back for more funds. Don’t let the excitement of the game entice you to do something that isn’t smart and is potentially financially dangerous. This will let you keep the fun of the game going with none of the stress that players who don’t follow the bankroll suggestions experience all too often.
